Not many people had a bigger year in entertainment than Pharrell Williams in 2013. The 40-year-old producer/rapper/singer/songwriter/fashion designer was everywhere this year, from award shows, covering magazines, hits all over the charts, scoring music for movies, and many business ventures outside of music. Pharrell composed the soundtrack to the movie Despicable Me and he has worked with almost nearly everyone in the industry from Miley Cyrus, Frank Ocean, Daft Punk, T.I., Solange Knowles, Mac Miller, Robin Thicke, Kanye West. Pharrell appeared alongside T.I. on Robin Thicke's hit single "Blurred Lines". The song has been a worldwide hit, has peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Pharrell's third Billboard Hot 100 number one single. Plus Pharrell released the first 24-hour music video to his Despicable Me 2 collaboration song, "Happy". With all of these accomplishments in 2013, GQ recognized Pharrell as one of their 5 people selected for the “Man of the Year” cover, which is well deserved.
Another tragedy struck American soil yesterday morning. Before full details were disclosed, CNN reported a shooting at Washington's Navy Yard occured at around 8:15 am yesterday which left multiple people wounded and 12 people dead. Police believed there was second shooter involved, but later identified only one shooter, 34-year-old Aaron Alexis from Texas and one of the military's own! He was eventually shot by the police. According ABC, he was a defense conctract employee and former Navy reservist. Police believe Alexis was wearing a military-style uniform that might have granted him access to the Navy Yard, but it is still uncertain for the reason behind the shooting. He had a history of violent behavior with the use of guns including arrests for two shootings. Alexis was also being treated for mental illness. His victims were civilians. Our condolences to those families.
