The African American Children's Book Fair is for Everyone

The African American Children's Book Fair is for Everyone

For 22 years literary publicist Vanesse Lloyd-Sgambati has organized an event called the African American Children's Book Fair which showcases the some of the best children's books written and illustrated by African Americans. Thousands come every year to Community College of Philadelphia for the Fair which takes place Saturday February 1st.

It's a labor of love and inspired by the impact books made on Vanesse's life.  Her love of literature not only turned into a career it also opened up a whole world of possibility.  Vanesse is a world traveler who once just read about the places she's been in books.

Although the event is called the African American Children's Book Fair, Vanesse says it's an event for everyone.  The books showcased are written and illustrated by Newberry Award winners (The Oscars of Children's Literature) and are critical for preparing all our children for the multicultural society this country is becoming.

Thanks to the corporate sponsors including Comcast, NBC 10, McDonalds and Health Partner Plans among others - the Fair will give away one thousand books.  There will also be books available for sale. For more information click here.

Check out my interview this Sunday on WDAS FM 6-7 AM and Power 99 7-7:30 AM with Vanesse Lloyd-Sgambati and some of the authors and illustrators featured at the African American Children's Book Fair Saturday February 1, 2014  from 1-3 pm at Community College of Philadelphia.
